JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Instruction and Online Learning Librarian advances cross-disciplinary and project-based learning and research by developing, curating and providing technical leadership for the library's online learning services and programs, and by providing instruction, research and project consultations.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Design, implement, experiment with, integrate, and assess library/information-literacy-related online learning modules, OERs, tutorials, and other digital learning objects and experiences that develop students' knowledge of and expertise in library resources, enhance learners' research skills, and support active, effective, and equitable online learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with other instruction librarians to design, develop, and deliver effective and inclusive online instructional plans and resources, using accessibility guidelines and principles, best practices in inclusive and equitable pedagogy, and relevant library and higher education standards.
  • Collaborate with library colleagues, faculty, and departments across campus to deliver a systematic curriculum-integrated library instruction program for undergraduate and graduate students at all levels and in all modes of delivery, including in-person and online.
  • Gather data to help assess the quality and impact of online instruction services, in collaboration with the Library's Undergraduate Learning Coordinator, and raise awareness and increase use of library services and resources among online, hybrid, and/or remote students and their faculty.
  • Help develop, implement, report and assess undergraduate information literacy instruction for project-based learning at all levels, and in all formats; and participate in providing research consultations and reference services.
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials and teaching strategies.
  • Collaborate on initiatives, projects, experiments, and innovations that advance the Library's contributions to teaching and learning programs. These may include the use of new instructional technologies and/or developing co-curricular and certificate-based paths for students to attain research and information skills.
  • Participate in undergraduate and graduate engagement and orientation initiatives.
  • Participate in and contribute to library and WPI committees, initiatives, and goals, including the library's and the university's goals regarding equity, inclusion, and sustainability.
  • Engage in and contribute to the profession through continuing learning, service, research, presentations, or professional communications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet department, library, and university goals and objectives. Some evening and weekend work may be possible; some remote work may be possible.


Required Knowledge, Experience, and Abilities:
  • ALA-accredited graduate degree or equivalent graduate degree.
  • Previous higher education teaching and/or academic library reference or instruction experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design models and learning theories.
  • Experience effectively using instructional technologies including screen capture, collaboration tools, and synchronous, and asynchronous modalities, and demonstrating knowledge of usability, equity, and accessibility standards for teaching through online materials or courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of key issues, emerging pedagogy trends, best practices, and concepts used in information and digital literacy.
  • Ability to work in a diverse community in a manner that is respectful, empathetic, and responsive to different needs and cultures.
  • Strong service orientation and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Flexibility, creativity and a willingness to take risks and experiment with new methods.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, document, and complete projects.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching information literacy skills and/or providing reference services in an academic library.
  • Successful completion of an information science course on scientific and engineering literature. (If the incumbent's education or experience does not include significant work related to engineering or science, the library will support the incumbent's completion of such a course within one year of hire).
  • Two years reference and/or instruction experience in an academic library including experience supporting students and faculty in sciences and/or engineering.
  • Experience assisting faculty or librarians with the effective use of technology in online learning environments.
  • Knowledge of evaluation, assessment, and planning methods and strategies.
